Features and Benefits
Aesthetic Appeal
The Alpha Collection is available in a wide array of colours, ensuring that there is a perfect match for every design preference. Whether you prefer the subtle tones of Silver Grey Multi or the bold statement of Antique Red, these pavers provide a versatile palette to enhance your garden's aesthetic.
Durability and Quality
Made from high-quality clay, London Stone clay pavers are sourced via our sister company, Chelmer Valley. Alpha clay pavers are designed to withstand the elements and the test of time. Their robust construction ensures longevity, making them a cost-effective choice for long-term projects. The pavers also feature two surface finishes, providing options for a smooth or textured look. Clays can be laid on their wider surface, or on their edge, for a sleeker, more modern look.
Design Flexibility
The slim, modern format of the Alpha Collection pavers allows for a variety of design possibilities. Use them to create intricate patterns such as classical herringbone or rustic basket weave or opt for a timeless running bond for a clean, contemporary look. This flexibility makes them suitable for driveways, pathways, patios, and even as decorative borders.
Combining clay bricks with other materials, such as natural stone, can give you a stunning finish, especially when used to delineate sections of a garden design.
A Wide Choice of Colours for Your Garden
The Alpha Range of clay paving encompasses a wide range of colours to suit your chosen style, from the buff-beige-cream tones of Aldridge and Westminster, to a range of graphite, pewter, and charcoal greys across Amersham, Charcoal Grey, and Stone Grey. Completing the range, Abbey Dark Multi, Seville, and Spalding, offer rustic hues from warming terracotta red to russet browns, for a timeless look.
Combining different bricks within the Alpha Range allows you to achieve an intriguing, harmonious look within your garden. Using more than one type of clay paver allows you to complement other colours and features of the garden, whether that be soft landscaping (i.e. trees, plants, and foliage) or hard landscaping (i.e. garden furniture, planters, lighting).
Key to the Alpha Range is the paver’s ability to be used across both modern and traditional designs. Whether creating a welcoming entrance to a period property, or building your perfect family garden, the Alpha Range’s clay bricks have a product to suit your requirements.
If you cannot find what you are looking for across our Alpha Range of clay paving, London Stone offer three other types of brick pavers and facing bricks, so you will be sure to find something across our wide range.
Applications Suitable for Alpha Clay Pavers
Driveways
The Alpha Collection pavers are an excellent choice for driveways, with magnificent examples demonstrated by our Bexhill and Winton clay pavers. Offering both strength and style, their durable clay composition can withstand the weight of vehicles while maintaining their aesthetic appeal. Unlike concrete block paving, clay pavers do not fade in colour over time, so are a sound choice of driveway material.
Patios
Enhance your outdoor living space with a patio crafted from Alpha Collection pavers. Their durability ensures that your patio will remain beautiful and functional for years to come. Clay Pavers can also be used to clad steps and risers, raised beds, and retaining walls.
Pathways
Create inviting pathways through your garden with these versatile pavers. Their various colour options allow for creativity in design, whether you prefer a uniform look or a mix of hues. Due to their ‘brick-sized’ dimensions, clay pavers are a fantastic material choice for creating curved details, such as pathways, in your garden setting.
Decorative Borders & Edging
Clay pavers are a highly adaptable product which can be used effectively to define garden beds, edges, and other landscape structures, such as ponds and water features. Their clean lines and rich colours provide a perfect finishing touch to any outdoor space.
By introducing soft landscaping into paved areas, softness and serenity are added, resulting in an immersive, seamless feel.
Environmental Impact
Clay bricks have been used as a paving material in the UK for hundreds of years. This longevity is one of the factors that makes pavers the environmentally friendly choice. You only have to look at towpaths along canals in the Midlands to how well they perform after so long.
Their life is not over when a paving scheme is changed, either. Just as house bricks can be reclaimed, so can pavers. In the Netherlands, which has a strong history of clay paving, up to 90% of pavers used in public works which are later taken up are re-used. Even those too damaged to lay again will end up as aggregate or crushed for re-use in brick manufacturing.
The production process also minimises environmental impact. London Stone’s clay pavers are made only of natural clays and sands—inert materials—to which no toxins or contaminants are added. No material is wasted: every bit of the raw material ends up in a brick. Indeed, along with quarried clay, the process uses clay which is the by-product of mineral- and stone-quarrying industries, as well as fired clay that is not up to standard, making pavers an efficient use of what would otherwise be waste material.
Installation and Maintenance
We have created this comprehensive clay paving installation video with award-winning landscapers, and training partner, The Landscape Academy.
Clay pavers are best laid on a ‘non rigid’ base, as the pavers need slight movement within them, and are not laid on a sand and cement base like natural stone or porcelain paving is. All our products are supplied with a thorough installation guide, for your peace-of-mind.
As with any paving type, ensure that the clay pavers are laid with an adequate fall, and we recommend instructing a reputable, professional landscaper to undertake works for your project.
Maintaining clay paving is about as easy as it can be, for an outdoor paving product. Clay bricks are designed-and-manufactured to naturally repel stain absorption and are usually kept in tip-top condition by sweeping, and occasional, gentle jet washing.
Frequently Asked Questions About Clay Paving
Are clay pavers suitable for all weather conditions?
Yes, clay pavers are exceptionally durable and can withstand various weather conditions, including frost and heavy rain. Their natural composition makes them resistant to weathering and have a lifespan of over 100 years.
Can I use clay pavers for a driveway?
Absolutely. The robust nature of clay pavers makes them an excellent choice for driveways. They can handle the weight of vehicles without cracking or deteriorating.
Does my driveway need to be SUDS compliant?
If you are laying a driveway, it may have to be permeable, and/or SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) compliant. A highly technical area of designing and installing a driveway, we’ve broken down SuDS information and regulations so that you can make an informed decision when choosing paving materials for your driveway. We recommend speaking to a professional SUDS expert before installing any driveway materials, to ensure that your application is SUDS compliant.
How do I clean and maintain clay pavers?
Clay Pavers are renowned for being an extremely low maintenance and hard-wearing paving material. Occasional sweeping and washing with a hose are typically sufficient. For stubborn stains, a pressure washer can be used with care.
I am stuck for inspiration, can you help?
If you are in the process of creating your dream garden, but are not sure where to begin, we have created a ‘Garden Ideas & Tips’ hub, packed full of inspirational garden projects, from driveways and front gardens to large and traditional gardens, and everything in between!
Are the colours of clay pavers permanent?
Yes, the colours of clay pavers are permanent as they are inherent to the clay used in their manufacture. They do not fade over time, maintaining their vibrant appearance.
Do clay pavers require sealing?
Sealing clay paving is not recommended, as the clays are manufactured to withstand staining naturally. Some customers choose to seal the jointing sand between the pavers if laid with a steep fall, or to enhance the colour.
Can I see clay pavers in person before buying?
Absolutely, and we recommend that you do, if possible! Our nationwide showroom network contains inspirational displays of clay paving, laid as it would be in your setting. You can view different laying patterns, touch-and-feel the different textures of each product, and view the colour variation within each brick.
Do I have to buy full packs of clays, even if I only need a few? And can I return any I do not use?
London Stone are one of the few paving companies where you do not have to buy full packs of materials. You can buy one paver or tens of thousands! We do not charge you for splitting packs, either, so you can return any materials that you don’t use, without hassle.
If you have any further questions, we have created a comprehensive FAQ Hub, to give you swift answers to any queries you may have. You can also contact London Stone in a number of ways, from WhatsApp chat, to email and phone.
