Slate paving slabs are always a popular choice and are a traditional option to complement period properties. However, slate is suitable for a range of garden styles. Our slate paving is chosen for its ability to split naturally into a fairly flat surface. This even split, together with rich colouring—Brazilian Black, Brazilian Grey and subtle Green have particularly even tones—work well in sleek, contemporary designs. Rustic slate, with its mix of rusts, greys and black, is full of character, looking particularly dramatic when wet. The blend of rustic colours can be a pleasing complement to period properties.
Is slate paving a good choice for a patio?
Yes, very. Slate paving slabs are very dense, with very low porosity, and therefore naturally stain-resistant. This makes slate slabs one of our lowest-maintenance natural paving choices. It is generally not necessary to seal slate.
Is slate paving slippery when wet?
With their riven surface, slate slabs offer natural slip resistance. Green and Rustic are particularly slip resistant. All our products meet the British Standard required for outdoor paving, and you can find slip-resistance values in the specifications section of each product. For slate, we give the pendulum test value. Values of 36+ are regarded as offering excellent slip-resistance. The density of slate also means that algae, which can turn patios green and slippery, finds it harder to gain a hold.
How to lay slate paving slabs
Because slate is so dense, slurry primer and SBR - a bond bridge – should be painted onto the back of slabs before laying, to ensure adequate adhesion between the back of the slabs and the bedding layer. Find out more about using primer and SBR.
