The Evolution from Sand and Cement to Modern Pointing and Grouting Products
The choice of pointing and grouting materials can have a significant impact on the look and longevity of your new patio. The traditional sand-and-cement approach for jointing and grouting has long been the standard in paving projects. However, this method has often failed to stand the test of time, leading to the need for frequent repairs and maintenance.
Today, as the market becomes more sophisticated, there’s a host of specialised products designed for specific stone types, various colours and application methods. They cater to both professional contractors and DIY enthusiasts and offer a much better alternative to sand and cement.
Tailored Solutions for Different Stone Types
Natural stone varies significantly in density, porosity, and durability. Limestone, sandstone, slate, and granite each have unique requirements when it comes to jointing and grouting. Spotting a gap in the market, modern manufacturers have developed a range of products that work well with different types of stone. These products ensure that the jointing material complements the stone’s natural properties, enhancing durability and appearance.
A Spectrum of Colours
One of the most exciting developments in the field of pointing and grouting is the increase in colours. Whether you're looking for a subtle tone that complements your stone or a contrasting shade to highlight your paving pattern, there's almost certainly a colour option available that’s perfect for your project. This variety means that the choice of jointing material has now become a key part of the design process.
Application Methods for Every Skill Level
With pointing and grouting products designed for different skill levels, everyone from professional landscapers to weekend DIYers can be sure of excellent results. The products always come with detailed instructions for mixing and application. Some are even pre-mixed, requiring no additional preparation. This ease of use helps to reduce installation time and error and means that DIYers can use them with confidence. Make your life even easier with our 5 tips on how to point a patio.
Built to Last
Today's grouting and pointing materials are engineered to withstand harsh conditions and last for decades. They are less prone to cracking, shrinking, or fading, and are often resistant to acids, alkalis, and other chemicals found in outdoor environments.

EASYJoint Patio Pointing Mortar
EASYJoint is an industry-respected, sweep-in jointing compound suitable for all types of paving, but, from an aesthetic point of view, we recommend it for natural stone. This user-friendly compound can be applied in almost any weather condition and fills joints from 3mm in width without needing to kneel or hand-press. It forms a durable and flexible joint that should be firm enough to walk on within 24 hours. We recommend this for use with our riven natural stone.
GftK Patio Pointing Mortar
GftK pointing mortars are very robust sweep-in products that can be applied in low temperatures and wet weather. Suitable for domestic and commercial patios, frost- and abrasion-resistant, they aren’t prey to weeds or boring insects. These mortars are also a good choice for domestic driveways with light to medium vehicle use, as they stand up very well to jet washing. We recommend them for use with our riven natural stone.
GftK vdw 850 is suitable for larger joints from 5mm wide, while GftK vdw 815 contains a finer grading of sand and can be used in joints as little as 3mm wide.
